Discover Taqueria El Cometa

Tucked away at Taqueria El Cometa on 1613 N Zaragoza Rd in El Paso, TX, the scent of sizzling carne asada hits before you even reach the door. Locals swear by the place, and it’s not hard to see why. The kitchen runs like clockwork, rolling out tacos so consistently flavorful you start planning your next order halfway through your current one. The staff moves quickly but never feels rushed, chatting with regulars while handing out plates loaded with grilled meats, chopped onions, and fresh cilantro. It’s the kind of spot where you can stop by after work, grab a table, and have food on it within minutes without losing an ounce of quality.

The menu isn’t complicated, but it doesn’t need to be. Street-style tacos, burritos stuffed with smoky al pastor, and tostadas layered with refried beans and crisp lettuce dominate the offerings. Corn tortillas come hot off the griddle, soft yet strong enough to hold the generous fillings. A salsa bar lines the wall with everything from bright, limey verde to a roasted chile rojo that packs a slow-building heat. If you’re unsure where to start, the barbacoa tacos are legendary—rich, tender beef slow-cooked to perfection, balanced by the crunch of raw onion and a squeeze of lime.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere has its own rhythm. The location feels casual, almost like a neighborhood hub more than a restaurant. Construction workers in dusty boots sit alongside families out for a quick dinner, and everyone seems to leave with the same satisfied look. Reviews often mention how clean the space stays despite the fast pace, and how friendly the staff is even during peak lunch hours. That consistency speaks volumes about the team running the place, keeping the line moving without losing the personal touch. It’s not a fancy experience, but it’s one that people trust—and keep coming back for.

  • Me and my buddies arrived at 10 am. They let us know they were still setting up and needed a few minutes. They let us in, and even though they were short one and still getting things ready, THEY TOOK GREAT CARE OF US. I need to give a shout out to the owner, Mario, and the staff. The food was terrific as it was the last time I was here. La Cometa is always on my list when I make the drive to El Paso from Phoenix. Thank U so much Mario!

  • Salsa bar, shredded beef flautas!! Wish it didn’t smell like fabuloso all the time.

  • Flautas are a must here, I got 3 papa and 3 carne and I couldn't decide which was better, but both were 10/10 for sure. The queso fresco and salsas always so good.

  • The food is good without a doubt, for a "hole in the wall" I gave it a solid 4-stars. However, when I consider the following factors, I must say that the Owners are milking both ends: 1) Customers are paying high prices for services and food that does not correspond with wages. 2) Employees are not being paid FAIR Wages, bare minimum is not fair. When a restaurant is charging its customers top dollar .

  • THE BEST FLAUTAS I HAVE EVER EATEN! And for $6! I waited in line several minutes to order flautas and steak tacos and lemonade. Long line - when the food is this amazing and the prices this low, then a long line is expected. They have a great salsa bar - i could drink the green avocado salsa - it is so good! The pico is as good as i have eaten - just balanced, fresh, not very hot - but EXCELLENT! Also cucumber and radishes and other things on the salsa bar to give the food a fresh twist! The waitress brings me chips as soon as i find a table and i devour the salsa bar’s offerings. The flautas arrive shortly after - covered in crema, queso fresco, onions, tomato, avocado - the flautas are rolled tightly, fried perfectly - not greasy but crisp - a delectable bite! The steak is covered with white cheese and the fresh tortillos with it make an amazing pairing for the flautas. If You are in El Paso - do Yourself a favor - eat the flautas at La Cometa!
